Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plates for Tension Springs used for?

Plates for Tension Springs is used in the suspension system of upholstered seating to provide bounce, support, and comfort. Coil springs are used in traditional upholstery; tension springs in modern suspension systems.

What height and gauge of coil spring do I need?

Spring height is selected based on the depth of the seat frame — typically 15-23cm (6-9 inch) springs for seat cushions. Gauge (wire thickness) determines firmness — 9 SWG is standard for seats; heavier gauges for firmer applications. The specification is in the product title.

What is the difference between coil springs and tension springs?

Coil (barrel) springs are used in traditional and high-end upholstery, tied in a grid pattern over webbing for deep, bouncy support. Tension (sinuous/no-sag) springs are used in modern furniture, running front-to-back in a serpentine shape for a firmer, lower-profile seat.

How are upholstery coil springs tied?

Traditional coil springs are tied using laid cord in a figure-8 knot pattern, connecting each spring to its neighbours and the frame. Springs are lashed in both directions (front-to-back and side-to-side) to prevent tilting.
